GSS is a Gujarati heritage organization founded in 1979 based in Sacramento, the capitol of State of California. GSS is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization for cultural, social and religious activities.
Goals of GSS are: To create an environment where members of GSS are proud of being its members; To teach, commemorate and celebrate religious events, festivals and rituals; To promote Gujarati language awareness among GSS youth; and To initiate and promote community service project(s), friendship for all and an environment where everyone feels welcome.
As we know many Gujarati's have settled in the USA for a very long time, in fact the first few families arrived in Sacramento area in the early fifties and brought over their relatives over a long time. The migration of Gujarati's is a non ending process whereby Gujarati's from all walks of life (professionals seeking jobs, relatives, parents, brothers and sisters joining their families and students coming for higher education and settling down in this area). A rough estimate may put the current Gujarati population at 7,000 people. Many realize early to join a cultural association such as GSS, while many later on in life, when their parents and others join them. All are welcome, young and old, new immigrants and ones with roots and generations in the area. We celebrate all the Hindu festivals, have great Garbas, excellent Diwali function and many more activities.
